Due to some stringent emission standards in certain countries, manufactures were forced to develop an EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system to improve the emissions of vehicles. Unfortunately, this led to a compromise on the efficiency and reliability of an engine.
The EGR system causes clogging of the intake manifold over time which reduces the efficiency and power of the vehicle. It could become damaged and most likely activate a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the cluster, or in many cases cause the car to go into limp mode. This is a very costly system and could cost well over £1000 to repair or replace.
